Several ancillary characters from earlier games in the series return in Tales of Monkey Island, including the Voodoo Lady (Alison Ewing),[23] an enigmatic voodoo priestess who advises Guybrush in his quests; Stan (Gavin Hammon),[24] a stereotypical salesman and business opportunist; and Murray (Denny Delk),[25] a talking skull with delusions of grandeur. The game introduces new characters to the series, such as Morgan LeFlay (Nicki Rapp),[26] a competent and athletic female bounty hunter who idolizes Guybrush. Other additions to the cast include Coronado DeCava, an explorer and former lover of the Voodoo Lady (Andrew Chaikin), and the Marquis de Singe (Jared Emerson-Johnson), an antagonistic French nobleman and doctor.[25][27]


Grossman said that the game's simultaneous release on Windows and WiiWare was due to Telltale's business model; the company alternates its game releases between WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade, as they want to "give the Wii a little love as well".[46] The concurrent development of the Wii version created issues; last minute changes to the PC version could put an episode over the size limit for WiiWare games.[50] The first episode was released for Windows on July 7, 2009, with the Wii version following twenty days later.[58] Telltale distributed the game through their own website, and later made it available for download from Steam and Amazon.com.[59][60] Xbox Live was omitted from the initial release, as both Telltale's Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, and LucasArts' special edition of The Secret of Monkey Island, were debuting on the system.[61][62]


While Telltale had not announced plans to port Tales of Monkey Island to Mac OS,[63] they did so on February 11, 2010;[7] it was among the first games available for the newly released Mac OS Steam client.[64] A PlayStation Network version was released in June 2010, due to consumer demand generated by the game's original announcement.[65] A PlayStation 3 release had not been possible at launch, as Telltale's game engine was not built to run on the platform.[66] An iPad-enhanced iOS port was being developed in 2010; the first episode was released on the App Store in December, and the rest of the episodes followed on June 23, 2011. As a bonus, players were offered the chance to download the first episode for free until July 22.[10][11] Telltale Games has not ruled out the option of porting the game to Xbox Live and Linux.[46] A port for the iPhone-enhanced iOS version was developed, and the first episode was released in November 2011, with the four remaining episodes that followed suit in a few months,[12] ending with the release of Chapter 5 on February 23, 2012.[13]


Elaine Marley's voice actress in The Curse of Monkey Island, Alexandra Boyd, was also brought back for her role.[22] Boyd was unable to travel to Telltale's studio in California; instead, she recorded her lines in London, while communicating with the voice director via Skype.[73] Earl Boen - the original voice actor for LeChuck - had retired from acting, and was not initially available to reprise his role.[74] The character was instead voiced by Adam Harrington in the first episode, and replaced by Kevin Blackton as the human LeChuck in chapters two to four. Boen returned to voice the demon LeChuck at the end of the fourth episode, and stayed on for the game's fifth and final chapter. Telltale later had Boen re-record the lines for LeChuck's demon incarnation in the first episode for the DVD release.[75] To make the actors' portrayals more forceful, Telltale implemented a lip sync system capable of presenting a large range of facial expressions on character models.[16]


Microsoft has revealed that one of the year's most surprising releases, Return to Monkey Island, will be arriving on Xbox Game Pass for PC, cloud, and Xbox consoles next week. Marking the return of the Monkey Island series after a 13-year hiatus and following up the dramatic conclusion of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, Return to Monkey Island is arguably one of 2022's best games so far, even scoring itself some hefty review scores.


Return to Monkey Island is the latest entry in the Monkey Island series of point-and-click adventure games that debuted in 1990 with the release of The Secret of Monkey Island for PC. The original game was developed by LucasArts (then LucasFilm Games) and created by Ron Gilbert, with Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer co-writing the game alongside Gilbert. The game was a major hit and is regarded today as one of the most influential games of all time thanks to its blend of clever puzzle design with sharp, witty writing. While this trio returned to write the sequel, Ron Gilbert departed LucasArts after Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge's ending, but not before ending the game on a major cliffhanger.


While the Monkey Island series continued all the way until 2009 - with the last entry, Tales of Monkey Island, developed by Telltale Games - Disney's purchase of LucasFilm in 2012 and subsequent closure of LucasArts killed any hopes of a true follow-up to Monkey Island 2 from Ron Gilbert and crew. That is, until April Fool's Day this year, when Ron Gilbert announced that he and Dave Grossman would be returning to develop a new Monkey Island game at Terrible Toybox, the studio behind Thimbleweed Park, with help from Devolver Digital and the recently re-established LucasFilm Games.


Return to Monkey Island picks right up from the final moments of Monkey Island 2, immediately elaborating on the game's bizarre ending and providing new context on the events of the rest of the entire series. What follows is a wonderful final outing for mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood that acts as a beautiful love letter to the series for fans, while also providing a fun onboarding point for newcomers by featuring plenty of lovable new and returning characters alongside a terrific art style.


Each of the player's objectives are clearly laid out in Guybrush's notebook, similar to an RPG or even games like Shenmue. The player's main goal is to figure out how to solve them with the tools at their disposal. This either means using the right dialogue in conversations, using inventory items in certain situations, or adventuring across one of the game's many islands. If it ever becomes too much, players can even use Return to Monkey Island's very generous hint book that rarely ever outright spoils a problem's solution unless they keep digging for it. Return to Monkey Island never wants players to look away from the game for a guide or even for tips, as everything they need can be found within the game itself and there is no shame in asking for help.


Return to Monkey Island Download features trouble modes: Casual, which strips puzzles returned to their barest form; and Hardcore. Gives puzzle threads so tangled that you will spend hours seeking to resolve them all. While Casual charts an easier course thru the story actually funny, and filled with the type of snicker out loud interactions that you so not often see video games these days Hardcore is well worth the occasional headache.


Return to Monkey Island, the sixth Monkey Island installment, was released on September 19, 2022 on the Nintendo Switch and Windows, coming to other formats later.[13] It is a collaboration between Gilbert's Terrible Toybox studio and Lucasfilm Games, and published by Devolver Digital.[13] A frame story in the game serves to explain and continue from the ending of LeChuck's Revenge, while the main narrative takes place after the other games in the series.[13] Ron Gilbert has expressed his desire to tell a simple and focused pirate story in the game, whilst also redefining the adventure game user interface and incorporating an increased emphasis of meat pies into the greater lore. In addition to Gilbert, Grossman returns as co-writer, with music from veteran series composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian, and Dominic Armato, Alexandra Boyd, and Denny Delk reprising their roles as Guybrush, Elaine, and Murray.[14][13] Jess Harnell replaces the retired Earl Boen as the voice of LeChuck.[15][16]


Guybrush is paid homage in the Naughty Dog video game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, where a pirate with major similarities to Guybrush is featured as one of the twelve pirate captains that founded Libertalia. Although he remains unnamed throughout the game, the resemblance is uncanny and his sigil is represented by a monkey. His portrait can be seen in the Libertalia treasury with the other founders and though his name is partly scratched out, the letters still visible spell out the truncated name "Guy Wood".[19]


David Carson, who had been set to direct Frankenstein and the Wolfman but left after the Universal shake-up, came back to ILM with the idea of an animated film based on the first Monkey Island game around 2000. With initial support from ILM, Carson worked an initial script with Corey Rosen and Scott Leberecht as to pitch the idea to Amblin Entertainment, the production company owned by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg had told Carson that he had previously told George Lucas that he should have made a Monkey Island movie years before, and other meetings with Amblin went well to proceed to further screenwriting work. The rest of ILM's story department was brought in to help write, including Steve Purcell, but this team worked separately from the writers that were developing the actual games, creating a disconnect between story the film was going with and the narrative already established in the video game series. As they continued to work out the screenplay, the direction of the film continued to veer further from the video game series, including at one point where Spielberg had suggested the game be about the monkeys on Monkey Island instead of the pirates. According to Carson, the lack of a creative direction at this point led to the film being shelved at ILM.[22] 041b061a72
