CIS Games 2025: A Celebration of Youth, Unity, and Sportsmanship in Azerbaijan

The CIS Games 2025 are set to be one of the most significant multi-sport events in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, bringing together thousands of young athletes in a spirit of friendly competition and cultural unity. Scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan from September 28 to October 8, the 2025 edition of the Games promises not only top-tier athletic competition but also an opportunity for regional solidarity, heritage celebration, and youth empowerment.

What are the CIS Games?

The CIS Games were established with the goal of strengthening cultural and athletic ties among member nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Games are held every two years and are open to athletes under the age of 23. First launched in 2021, the Games offer a unique platform for emerging athletes to gain international experience while fostering cooperation and goodwill among neighboring states.

In 2025, Azerbaijan will proudly host the third edition of the event. With previous games hosted by Russia and Belarus, the CIS Games 2025 mark a major milestone for Azerbaijan as it showcases its ability to organize large-scale international sporting events.

Multi-City Hosting Across Azerbaijan

What makes the CIS Games 2025 unique is their decentralized format. Unlike many sporting events confined to a single city, these Games will be hosted across seven vibrant cities in Azerbaijan: Ganja, Mingachevir, Gabala, Sheki, Goygol, Yevlakh, and Khankendi. This multi-city approach aims to promote regional development, spread tourism opportunities, and allow a greater number of citizens to experience the excitement of the Games firsthand.

Ganja, the second-largest city in Azerbaijan, has been designated the “Sports Capital of the CIS” for the year. This title comes with national pride and great responsibility, as Ganja will serve as the primary hub for ceremonies and major competitions.

Sports and Disciplines Featured in the 2025 Games

The CIS Games 2025 will feature 23 sports disciplines, including a balanced mix of Olympic sports and traditional regional games. Athletes will compete in:

Youth, Culture, and Community

More than just a sports competition, the CIS Games 2025 serve as a vehicle for cultural exchange and regional diplomacy. The event promotes healthy lifestyles, teamwork, mutual respect, and youth engagement — values that transcend national borders. Through sport, young athletes are encouraged to form friendships, learn about each other’s cultures, and foster a sense of shared identity.

One of the core objectives of the Games is to instill moral values and national pride among youth while creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere that celebrates unity in diversity.

Organizational Excellence and Infrastructure

Azerbaijan has a strong track record of successfully hosting international events, including the 2015 European Games, Islamic Solidarity Games, and the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This experience has enabled the country to build state-of-the-art sports facilities and develop the logistical know-how to manage events of this scale.

Twelve sports venues across the seven host cities have been upgraded or newly constructed for the CIS Games 2025. From athlete villages to transportation networks, every aspect of the Games is being meticulously planned by the Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan and the Baku City Circuit Operations Company.

Expected Impact and Legacy

An estimated 5,500 participants, including athletes, coaches, officials, and media representatives, are expected to attend the CIS Games 2025. This influx will not only boost the local economy but also leave a lasting legacy in the form of enhanced sports infrastructure and elevated international visibility for Azerbaijan.

Furthermore, the Games will help cement Azerbaijan’s position as a regional leader in youth development and sports diplomacy. By showcasing its rich history, hospitality, and commitment to excellence, Azerbaijan aims to set a new standard for future editions of the CIS Games.
