In addition, the following editions are available for other specialized uses:

The client application which accesses data from the database server can be on the same machine or on a different machine and can access the data via a set of protocols and the internet. Microsoft has developed a wide variety of MS SQL server editions keeping in view the type of audience that uses database server products. MS SQL Server editions are available for large enterprises, medium-scale organizations to individuals.

A good thing about the MS SQL server is that it is available in multiple editions in order to cater to the needs of huge corporate sector organizations to domestic users. The price range also varies which allows anyone to buy the product which meets their price range. It mainly includes:

The developer edition includes all the functionalities of the Enterprise edition. However, the license is used for development and test system, unlike Enterprise, which is for the production server. You can build and test applications in this edition because developers can make an application on top of the SQL Server. In general, the Microsoft SQL Server Developer version allows developers to use this version for practice and to see if it fits their project. As such, this is the reason a user has access to all the features available in the Enterprise edition.

If your old database was MSDE of SQL Server 2000, it is technically not possible to restore the old database to SQL 2012. This is a limitation set by Microsoft (see: -sql-server-2000-to-sql-server-2012.aspx).

The SQL Server 2008 Express Edition is the free edition that is designed to support small or targeted applications with a core set of secure database requirements. This edition replaces the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) platform available in SQL Server 2000 and augments the Express Edition in SQL Server 2005.

SQL Server 2008 can run on a number of Windows operating systems. SQL Server 2008 can run on top of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows VISTA, and Windows XP. When referring to Windows Server 2008, either the Windows Server 2008 edition with or without Hyper-V can be utilized. Please note that SQL Server 2008 does not support running Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0.

In a previous tutorial I explained that there are a few methods to accessyour SQL Server. If you're a developer you'll use several tools, butif you're the system administrator you'll use three primary tools tomanage the server from day-to-day. In this tutorial, I'll focus on thosetools for SQL Server 2000.

I am trying to use SQL Developer to migrate several SQL server database's into Oracle. Some of them are hosted in a SQL Server 2000 instance and the rest are on SQL Server 2005. I am able to connect to the SQL Server 2000 databases without issue, but not the 2005 databases. I have followed every step in several different forum posts all to no avail. Why is SQL Developer fine with the 2000 instances, but flatly refuses to connect to the 2005's? I have zero problems connecting to the databases using TOAD or Management studio.

In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft has released a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver for SQL Server. The SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver v1.2 download is available to all SQL Server users at no additional charge, and provides access to SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and SQL Server 2008 from any Java application, application server, or Java-enabled applet. This is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides database connectivity through the standard JDBC application program interfaces (APIs) available in J2EE (Java2 Enterprise Edition).

The SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) is a .NET Framework object model that enables software developers to create client-side applications to manage and administer SQL Server objects and services. This object model will work with SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008.

It is very important to note that those are DEPRECATED. Those are targeting SQL Server 2000 and lack new features introduced since. Windows will not ship any new drivers or update those via its Windows Update. Going forward, you, the application developer, must provide the drivers of appropriate version to use with your application, rather than relying on the ones provided by Windows. Do NOT use those in your current development. 350c69d7ab
